History- Botulinum Toxin Type A, (Botox) has been widely used in general medicine for many years to treat symptoms such as muscle spasms, flickering eye lids etc. It has been licensed for use in the glabellar region for many years.

Methodology- When Botox is injected into the corrugator and procerus muscles it has the temporary effect of blocking the release of acetylcholine, which is the chemical that causes muscles to contract. By blocking the release of acetylcholine, the muscles which cause those wrinkles do not receive the signal from the brain to contract. Over time, the skin becomes smoother-you will look and feel younger and more relaxed. As the Botox treatment is only temporary, your wrinkles will reappear after about three months-then you can simply top up! After the first year's treatment subsequent top ups are only needed twice a year.

Treatments-Most commonly the frown lines, forehead lines and crow's feet are the areas that are chosen for treatment. Botox is injected with a very fine needle and only a few patients report minor discomfort after the treatment. Treatments take about thirty minutes and there is little or no recovery time required-you can have it done on your lunch hour! You can expect the full effect of the treatment to be apparent after two weeks, although often the improvements occur within five days. The results can last for three months. Most patients have treatments three or four times a year.
